Solidarity and Memory: The Visit of Bernd Hornikel, Mayor of Schorndorf, to Tulle, Confirms Franco-German Friendship

Schorndorf – Tulle: A Friendship of Over 50 Years

The beginning of September 2024 marked a poignant moment for the city of Tulle, highlighting the depth of the Franco-German ties with the city of Schorndorf, formalized by the Friendship Pact signed by both cities on June 28, 1969.

Bernd Hornikel, Mayor of Schorndorf, and a delegation from his city were welcomed in Tulle for a series of events commemorating this friendship and fraternity.

Reflection and Tribute at the High Place of Cueille

On Saturday, September 7, an atmosphere of solemnity and respect enveloped the High Place of Cueille. The Mayor of Schorndorf, accompanied by the Mayor of Tulle and the President of the Martyrs’ Committee of Tulle (CDM), laid a wreath in tribute to the martyrs. This symbolic act of memory and respect illustrates the unbreakable bond between the two cities, reflecting resilience and healing across generations.

The ceremony, though marked by pouring rain, did not falter under the weight of the water; on the contrary, it was enhanced by the powerful speech of the Mayor of Schorndorf. Translated for the audience, his address emphasized the continuity of memory and the mutual respect between the German and French peoples.

Roland Gonieau, President of the Martyrs’ Committee, did not fail to succinctly recount to our German friends the events that devastated the city of Tulle and the history of the High Place of Cueille.

Symbolism of the Planting of the Apple Trees at Auzelou

Beyond the gestures of remembrance, the visit was also marked by a deeply symbolic act. Indeed, the Mayor of Schorndorf, along with his counterpart from Tulle, planted two apple trees at the Auzelou site. These trees, symbols of growth and life, represent the Franco-German friendship and the ongoing commitment of both nations to foster peace, kindness, and understanding.

This initiative, attended by Deputy François Hollande and other prominent figures, served not only to strengthen existing bonds but also to remind everyone of the importance of international cooperation for lasting peace. The applause that followed the planting of the trees resounded as a renewed commitment to these ideals.

A Continuous Commitment to Peace

Bernd Hornikel’s visit to Tulle, marked by acts of remembrance and symbols of fraternity, reaffirms the importance of cultural and historical exchanges in building a shared future. These events enable our collective ability to forge a path of peace, friendship, and harmony.

This visit illustrates how, through symbolic gestures and words of comfort, Tulle and Schorndorf continue to build a bridge over history, emphasizing that even the darkest periods can lead to friendships born from an unshakable reconciliation.
