HAUT LIEU DE CUEILLE
Taking advantage of her visit to Corrèze on Thursday, 22 November 2025, Mrs. Verdier-Jouclas, Director General of the ONaCVG (National Office for Combatants and Victims of War), wished to pay tribute to our martyrs by laying a wreath on this sacred ground at the Haut Lieu de Cueille, a memorial dedicated to the 99 men hanged on 9 June 1944 and to the deportees who never returned.
Despite winter temperatures, those attending the ceremony included Mr. Xavier Kompa, Departmental Director of the ONaCVG; Jacques Spindler, First Deputy Mayor of Tulle in charge of General Affairs, Communication, and Citizenship; and Roland Gonieau, President of the Comité des Martyrs, accompanied by several members of the Association. A delegation of standard-bearers from the department formally marked the occasion.
After laying the wreath in front of the memorial stele alongside Mr. Xavier Kompa (P1–P2), the Director General, in her speech (P3), recalled the commitment of each and every one to ensure that the memory of such a tragedy endures in the minds of future generations and that none may forget. Forgetting, as we know, fosters and rekindles the violence, hatred, and ideologies that led to these events and which, sadly, still persist today in certain regions close to our country.
President Roland Gonieau then spoke (P4) to thank, on behalf of the Committee and its members present on site (P5), the Director General of the ONaCVG for her visit, praising her commendable and principled initiative and her meaningful tribute. He emphasized the inseparable partnership formed by the Comité des Martyrs and the City of Tulle, through the city’s commitment to support the Association in the creation of a Memorial Space dedicated to all the victims of 9 June 1944 in Tulle, and to all the men and women—combatants and members of the Resistance—who gave their lives for the Nation.
Simone Veil said: “Remembrance is a peaceful and powerful weapon. It protects the future.”
