Tributes to the Victims and Heroes of Deportation

Ceremony of 27 April

The National Day of Remembrance of the Victims and Heroes of Deportation, celebrated every last Sunday in April, was established in France in 1954 to honor the memory of the deportees of the Second World War, victims of the Nazi concentration and extermination camps.

This date was chosen because it is close to the liberation of the camps, notably:

  • Buchenwald (11 April 1945)
  • Ravensbrück
  • Dachau (29 April 1945)

This day is essential to pass on memory to younger generations and to remind us that such acts and atrocities must never be repeated.
