Dedication of the Milestones of Memory

Ceremony of 8 June

“La Mémoire en Chemin” (“Memory on the Move”), chaired by Maurice Caumières, is a non-profit association under the French law of 1901. Its main purpose is to trace the path of the SS Division Das Reich from the south of Lot-et-Garonne to the Creuse, passing through Oradour-sur-Glane.

It is one of the longest remembrance trails in Europe:

  • 5 départements
  • more than 400 km
  • 72 sites marked by the suffering and atrocities of Nazi barbarity

To achieve this, the association brings together the main remembrance organizations of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, including the Comité des Martyrs de Tulle.

In the face of the risk of forgetting Nazi terror, one of the immediate priorities was to place markers on the sites that endured the atrocities of the Das Reich in the spring of 1944.

These “black boxes” safeguard our collective memory and serve as a digital gateway to:

  • a 1 minute 30 animated film retracing the events of spring 1944
  • a dedicated web page for each site, on the Mémoire en Chemin website (www.memoire-en-chemin.com, under construction), providing access to testimonies, archival images, and educational materials

Tulle is one of the first sites to be equipped:

  • a first marker was installed at the Cueille Memorial
  • A second at the Louisa Paulin Stele, the very place where this inauguration took place on 8 June 2025, in the presence of many distinguished guests, as shown in the photographs below.
